Specialised tasks require special programming. This applies even more so for the manufacture of a South Pole telescope comprising 218 panels, each of which is a prototype. Whether material, surface, weight or shrinkage, everything had to be right for Zrinski AG. A clear case for the hyperMILL® CAM software from OPEN MIND Technologies AG: the parameterised sub-routines made a simple compilation possible of the main program needed for this particular task. The clear job list and the programming option using drag & drop also played a role. The programming template was created in one hour and could be executed immediately after one test run. At the same time, OPEN MIND mastered the challenge of high, thin walls with only a few millimetres of wall thickness quickly and easily: due to the customer-specific modification of some cycles, the panels could be rough-machined from both sides with five millimetres of stock allowance. hyperMILL® was thus a key factor for the success of this complex project: the just-in-time programming provided the essential efficiency, and the customer-specific settings provided the absolutely necessary precision for the manufacture of the panels.
